Philip is now a lieutenant, a galley officer on the fighting galley Cats-Head. In a sea battle he clashes briefly with an old enemy, someone who owned Philip when he was a slave. A new admiral takes over the fleet and there are changes in ships and tactics. After losing more friends in the fighting Philip is surprised when there is a sudden end to the war.
For the navy this does not mean peace as Philip and others are sent to capture a pirate stronghold high on precipitous cliffs. Here Philip leads a successful assault up a steep path and gains great fame.
The war flares up again and Philip is sent with a naval regiment to assist in laying siege to city previously captured by the enemy. While working on a tunnel under the city walls Philip is instrumental in leading a foray inside that captures a gate- and the city falls.
Philip finds the situation reversed as he and others find themselves in turn besieged by a new enemy army.
Finally the enemy withdraws and Philip receives further promotion.

Philip is now captain of his own fighting galley, the Cat-Scratch. With his promotion comes involvement with the rich elite when he is invited to prayer meetings at their houses. It also involves him with one of their women.
His personal fortune rapidly increases as he is rewarded for his exploits, and Philip even buys his own home.
As the war continues the city’s enemies seem to be working to have bigger and better equipped armies, and also a new weapon for their fleet. The enemies launch a massive invasion and Philip is involved in two massive battles, one on land and one at sea. Two battles to win the war for good, or lose it and see his city destroyed.
